Israel voted, and exit polls point to a tight finish

Israelis voted Tuesday in their first parliamentary election since the October 2023 Hamas-led attack and the wars that followed. Turnout ran at its highest in more than two decades, according to NPR.
Early exit polls showed no clear winner. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party won the most seats of any single party, with 25 seats. But the opposition bloc led by former military chief Gadi Eisenkot came out slightly ahead overall, with 52 seats against 50 for Netanyahu’s coalition, according to three major exit polls.
Those are exit polls, not final results. The final count may not be known until Wednesday, and if no bloc wins a majority in the 120-seat Knesset, party leaders will need days or weeks to build a governing coalition.
At least 60 Christians killed in attacks in Ethiopia’s Oromia region

At least 60 people were killed in two attacks in Ethiopia’s Oromia region in the past week, the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church said. Reuters reports 14 believers were killed in Merti Woreda on October 20 and 46 in Shirka Woreda on October 24. More than 20 homes burned and more than 20 people went to hospitals with severe injuries.
The church did not name who carried out the attacks. The Oromia regional government blamed a rebel alliance that includes the Oromo Liberation Army. That alliance, in turn, blamed the regional government, according to Reuters. The Oromo Liberation Army has not commented on these attacks and has denied past attacks of this kind.
One resident told BBC Amharic his 75-year-old father was among the dead. He described an ambush: “We were completely unprepared and had no prior knowledge. They surrounded us from all four directions.” The church said five of the dead were children.
Jordan struck southern Syria, and Syria closed the border crossing

Jordanian warplanes struck southern Syria on Monday evening, and Syria closed the Nassib border crossing with Jordan on Tuesday. Nassib is the only passenger and commercial crossing between the two countries.
Jordan said it hit militant hideouts linked to an October 23 attack on a church funeral in Karak, Jordan, that killed nine people and wounded 34. Syria’s civil defence said seven people were killed in the strikes in Daraa and Suwayda, including three children and a woman from one family.
The two governments do not agree on whether the strikes were coordinated. Jordan said they were. Syria said it was not notified in advance and opened an investigation.

Trump and Talarico held dueling rallies in Texas, one week before the midterms

President Donald Trump campaigned in Texas on Tuesday with rallies in Corpus Christi and Lubbock for Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton. Less than three miles from Trump’s Lubbock rally, Democratic nominee James Talarico held his own rally at 7 p.m. Central time.
The money in this race is enormous. Talarico raised more than $146 million through October 14, according to Federal Election Commission reports cited by USA Today. Paxton raised $22 million. Outside groups spent $153 million opposing Talarico and $13 million supporting him through October 20, according to OpenSecrets. Outside groups spent $91 million supporting Paxton and $41 million opposing him.

Trump offered $1 million for voter fraud tips that lead to convictions
President Donald Trump said Monday his administration will pay $1 million to anyone who reports voter fraud that leads to an arrest and conviction. He announced it in a Truth Social post and repeated it to reporters before a rally in Mississippi.
The offer covers past elections and the November 3 midterms. Trump did not say where the money would come from, which agency would run the program, or how a tipster would claim it. No formal program has been announced.

Supreme Court leaves the ban on shelving deportation cases in place

The U.S. Supreme Court declined Tuesday to restore immigration judges’ power to temporarily pause deportation cases, a practice called “administrative closure.” The justices issued a brief, one-sentence order with no explanation and no public dissent.
Judges used administrative closure for decades to take cases off busy dockets while a related matter was pending, such as a visa petition or an appeal. The Trump administration and Texas agreed in June to end the practice, and a federal judge approved that agreement the same day. Three cities, including Baltimore, and an immigrant legal advocacy group asked the Supreme Court to pause the deal while the case continues. The court said no.

Judge blocks rule that would have cut refugees’ time to fight losing their status
A federal judge in Boston temporarily blocked a Trump administration rule that would have cut the time refugees have to contest losing their legal status from 30 days to 10 days. Judge Julia Kobick’s order holds the rule through November 6.
The rule came from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services on October 14. Refugee advocacy groups sued on Monday. The Department of Homeland Security estimated the rule would affect as many as 186,000 refugees.

Privacy group accuses Scale AI of spying on freelance workers
European privacy group noyb filed five complaints against Scale AI in France, Italy, the Netherlands and Austria on Tuesday. The complaints say Scale AI illegally monitored freelance workers on its Outlier platform, where more than 900,000 freelancers do tasks that train AI models for clients such as Meta, OpenAI and Google.
The complaints say up to 19 trackers followed workers, recording keystrokes and mouse movements every few seconds, and that the data could be rebuilt into a video replaying a whole work session. They also say workers had to submit ID documents and face video to a verification firm, and that four workers who asked for copies of their data between December 2025 and May 2026 got no answer.
These are allegations in complaints, not findings by regulators. Scale AI did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
