Trump says Russia and Ukraine agreed to an energy ceasefire; Kyiv was caught off guard

President Trump announced Sunday that Russia and Ukraine have reached an energy ceasefire that takes effect immediately. “Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!” he posted on Truth Social.
The announcement surprised Kyiv. “The cease-fire announcement was news for me,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told Axios. He added that if Russia truly agreed, Ukraine would accept it: “Ukraine always FULLY supports steps toward de-escalation, the protection of lives, and the decisions needed to end the war.”
No details came with the announcement — no timeline, no terms. The news follows a week of tension over Trump’s Friday diesel deal with Russia and his suggestion that Ukraine should “get a new leader who can make a deal.” Trump offered no specifics on how the ceasefire was negotiated. Second Houthi missile strike hits Riyadh airport; an American was killed

Yemen’s Houthi rebels struck King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh for the second time this week. At least 13 people were killed in the attacks, including an American citizen. UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the strikes, saying attacks on civilians violate international law. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the attacks “a spiral of violence” pushed by “Iran’s proxies.” Britain’s defense secretary called it “a dangerous escalation” but ruled out offensive military operations “at this stage.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed an American was among the dead and said the U.S. stands with Saudi Arabia. Iran says it received a U.S. response on its war-ending proposal

Iranian officials said they have received an official U.S. response to Tehran’s proposal to end the war — now in its eighth month — but the details are still unclear. The fighting between the U.S., Israel, and Iran has restricted oil shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and kept energy prices near historic highs for months. (Single source: The Associated Press)

DOJ opens antitrust probe into TV networks over White House pool boycott

The Justice Department is investigating the five major TV networks — ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News and NBC — for possible antitrust violations. The probe follows the networks’ brief suspension of White House pool coverage last month, after President Trump banned CNN, Politico and MS NOW from the White House complex.
“Group boycotts among commercial competitors can violate the Sherman Act,” DOJ spokeswoman Emily Covington said Saturday. The networks said the pool pause was solidarity with banned colleagues. A federal judge had temporarily blocked the White House ban on September 24, and the case is still pending. Networks learned of the probe Friday and were asked to turn over communications about the pool. (USA Today, CNN, The Wall Street Journal)
Trump toys with renaming the oceans after himself

At a rally in Clarksville, Tennessee, on Saturday, President Trump floated renaming the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean after himself. “We call it Trump Ocean or Ocean of the Americans, something like that,” he told the crowd. He has already moved to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” and Lake Ontario “Lake America.” The ocean idea has not been put into action. (Single source: The New York Post)

Man struck by ICE vehicle in Houston has two broken legs, lawyer says

Miguel Parra-Hernandez, a 48-year-old undocumented immigrant from Mexico, has two broken legs and was set for surgery Sunday after being struck by an ICE vehicle Saturday during an enforcement operation near Houston. He and another man fled on foot during a vehicle stop; ICE said Parra-Hernandez “ran in front of an ICE vehicle.” Surveillance footage shows the vehicle accelerating before hitting him. ICE says it called EMS and gave aid. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the other man, Jose Mendoza-Cervantes, described by ICE as a “public safety threat” with prior DUI and weapons arrests, remains at large. Parra-Hernandez remains in ICE custody. (CNN)
Federal agents tear-gas protesters who blocked ICE vehicles in Salem, Oregon

About 30 protesters surrounded federal agents’ vehicles in a Salem parking lot Saturday morning, blocking them in with cars near Lancaster Drive NE and Sunnyview Road NE. Federal agents told Salem police they cleared the crowd with tear gas and drove away before officers arrived. 911 callers reported breathing trouble and eye irritation; Salem police and firefighters gave first aid at the scene. Police said they had no advance notice of the operation and did not coordinate with ICE. Evidence goes to the Oregon Department of Justice and U.S. Department of Homeland Security for review. Rep. Andrea Salinas said ICE operations are not making Oregon communities safer. (WVLT, Willamette News)

FTC and USDA probe tractor makers over repair restrictions; stocks sink

The Federal Trade Commission and the U.S. Department of Agriculture launched a joint public inquiry Wednesday into the farm equipment market, asking farmers, repair shops, dealers and industry workers to report barriers to buying, servicing and repairing agricultural equipment — including “restrictions, penalties or retaliation.” Public comments close December 7.
The inquiry follows a growing pile of farmer complaints and comes after the FTC’s July settlement with Deere over repair restrictions, joined by five states. Wall Street didn’t like the news: Caterpillar fell 5.9%, AGCO 5.7%, CNH Industrial 5.3% and Deere 2.8% on Wednesday. The agencies called it an information-gathering inquiry, not a lawsuit — nobody is being fined. But for farmers who have been locked out of fixing their own tractors for years, the message is clear: the government is finally listening.

Wall Street closes a wild week in the green

Stocks rallied Friday and all three major indexes finished the week higher. The Dow gained 0.83% — about 423 points — to close at 51,654.95. The S&P 500 rose 0.59% to 7,811.54, its second-highest close ever, just under Tuesday’s record. The Nasdaq added 0.64% to 27,366.17 for its fourth straight weekly gain.
Big telecoms sank after SpaceX said it will buy wireless spectrum to build Starlink Mobile into a U.S. carrier: T-Mobile fell 13.3%, Verizon 8.75% and AT&T nearly 10%. Tower owners jumped — Crown Castle gained 15.6% and American Tower 9.3%. Humana rose 11% on improved Medicare ratings. Consumer sentiment slipped in October to 46.3, the University of Michigan’s preliminary reading, as lower-income households worry about living costs with the midterms three weeks away.
